With a month to go until Christmas, residents are being urged to think carefully about the commitment of owning a pet before buying a dog this festive season.

The advice comes after the number of dogs seized with welfare issues by Worcestershire Regulatory Services’ Dog Warden team has reached a worrying high.

Since 2022, the shared public service has collected 336 dogs that have shown visible signs of neglect or previous trauma and have required veterinary assistance.

To reduce the number of dogs taken into their care in the future, Worcestershire Regulatory Services, a shared public service funded by the six district councils in the county, is sharing tips that citizens should consider before purchasing a puppy.

Background research

Dogs deserve to live in a safe, secure environment and raising a dog is time consuming.

It is important individuals do their homework and consider the breed of dog that would be most suited to them and their family’s lifestyle.

There is a vast amount of information online about the different pedigrees and their temperaments dependent on the breed of dog.

Prospective owners should also research insurance companies or create a separate saving fund for any unexpected costs that come with owning a dog.

Consider the cost of a dog

The average life expectancy of a dog in the UK is around 13 years old, and the maintenance costs of a dog can be incredibly expensive.

Aspects to reflect on:

  • Veterinary costs, which can include but are not limited to:
    • Microchipping and registering your dog – a legal requirement in the UK
    • Neutering your dog
    • Worm and flea treatments
  • Dog supplies, which can include but are not limited to:
    • A collar with tag – a legal requirement in the UK
    • A lead and harness
    • A dog bed and secure seating for car travel
    • Toys and treats
  • Behavioural classes
  • Grooming appointments, including regular nail clippings

Choose a licensed breeder

Worcestershire Regulatory Services strongly recommends buying from licensed breeders.

The shared service is responsible for the administration, regulation and enforcement of animal licences across the county and public registers, which feature licensed individuals’ star ratings, are available on their website: www.worcsregservices.gov.uk/all-services/licensing/public-registers/

Pip Griffin, Senior Dog Warden for Worcestershire Regulatory Services, said: “It is a privilege to own a dog and buying a pet is like adding an additional family member into your home.

“Another important consideration for those thinking of getting a dog is that there are hundreds of dogs in rescue centres who are also looking for good homes.

“As an organisation, we will continue to play our part in improving animal welfare across the county by providing residents with high quality advice and support.”
