Pet Owners Warned of UK Heatwave’s Effects on Pets and Reminded ‘One Less Walk Will Not Kill Your Pet’

Pet owners are being warned of the dangers the rising temperatures can cause to their pets. As temperatures are expected to reach record levels, Worcestershire Regulatory Services are reminding those with pets to consider their welfare in the heat.

Senior Dog Warden, Pip Singleton, reminds owners that even everyday activities, such as going for a walk, can be fatal to our beloved pets in the extreme conditions. She says, “Your dog will not die with one less walk, however heatstroke to dogs can be fatal.”

“Be mindful of your pets as they struggle to regulate their body temperature. Do what you can to keep them cool.”

Owners should also be conscious that certain pets, such as elderly animals or breeds with breathing difficulties, have a higher risk of health issues in the heat.

Pip suggests that keeping dogs in shady areas when outside, or even keeping them inside if too hot, is better for your pets. Ensure they have plenty of water, or consider giving them some cool, but not freezing, water to stand in. If you need to walk your pets, ensure it’s at cooler parts of the day such as early morning or late evening. You can do the five second heat check which is when you place your hand on a pavement for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.

Importantly, keep your eye on your dog for signs of overheating including heavy panting and loss of energy. If this happens, ensure your dog is still in a shaded or cool area, give them water, wet their coat, or cool them with a wet towel, and contact a vet if you have concerns.
