Ducklings Day Nursery in Hagley has been awarded Worcestershire’ top food award for the healthier meals and snacks it serves to its children.
The nursery was awarded the Healthier Choices Food Award by Worcestershire Regulatory Services for serving fresh, varied, home-made meals including plenty of fruit and vegetables.
Inspectors also praised the allotment, herb garden and cooking activities at the nursery which enable the children to get involved from farm to fork.
Alyson Burton, nursery manager, said: “We are delighted to have achieved this award and it reflects our whole staff team’s commitment to healthy eating. Jan, our cook, has worked really hard to produce delicious, healthy meals for our children and cooks fresh meals for them every day with local and seasonal produce. The children are often involved in activities to promote their understanding of a healthy diet, including visiting our allotment to grow their own fruit and vegetables.”
The Healthier Choices Food Award scheme recognises Worcestershire food businesses that cater for customers by offering them a variety of healthier and flexible options, with a special Gold Award for businesses that also use some food that has been grown or produced nearby. It is only open to four or five star food hygiene rated businesses under the Food Standards Agency’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.
As well as showing customers that the business is part of a scheme that puts customer satisfaction first, the Healthier Choices Food Award comes with a range of additional business benefits such as nutritional analysis of recipes, discounted training for staff and networking and informative events.
